Wing foil equipment: choosing wing, board and foil
The wrong kit is the most common reason a good day is wasted. Here are the starting sizes by weight and wind, explained: you do not need to memorise a table, you need to understand what changes when you move one size.
The four parts, and what each one does
- The wing: generates power. Bigger pulls in less wind — and becomes unmanageable when it builds.
- The board: floats you before you fly. Volume in litres is what matters; once flying you barely feel it.
- The foil: front wing, stabiliser, fuselage and mast. It decides most of how the ride feels: large area means early take-off and slow flight; small area means speed and reactivity.
- Accessories: board and wing leashes, wetsuit, helmet, impact vest, pump. Not a detail — the wrong leash is a hazard, not an annoyance.
Wing size by weight and wind
Pick the wing from the forecast wind and your weight, then adjust down if your foil is large and up if it is small. If the wind is gusty, take the smaller size: an oversized wing in gusts is unmanageable.

If you buy only one to start with, take the 12-15 kn column: light days far outnumber strong ones, and staying ashore in too much wind costs you nothing.
Board volume
The rule that works: as a beginner, litres = body weight in kg + 30/40. It lets you kneel and stand without sinking while you learn. Once you fly consistently, dropping 20-30 litres makes everything handier — but there is no prize for going small early.

Foil: front wing area and mast
Front wing area changes the feel more than anything else. Large means early lift and slow flight — exactly what learning requires. Small means speed and tight turns, and forgives far less.

A long mast helps in swell and choppy water; a short one forgives mistakes and touches the bottom less. For first sessions, short wins.
What to buy, in what order
- Take a lesson before buying anything: you will change your mind about half your choices.
- Board and foil first, and on the large side: they are what get you flying.
- One wing, sized for the average wind at your home spot.
- A second, smaller wing only once you notice yourself staying home on windy days.
- Accessories immediately, not "later": a helmet and leashes beat any upgrade.
Buying used: what to check
- Wing: leading edges that will not hold pressure for an hour, open seams, badly glued valves. Inflate it and leave it in the sun for twenty minutes before deciding.
- Board: blisters, dents around the track box, corroded screws. Water in the core is not a fixable problem.
- Foil: corrosion between mast and fuselage (aluminium and steel screws weld themselves with salt), chipped trailing edges, play between parts.
- Compatibility: Tuttle or track plate, thread sizes, shims. Half of used parts do not fit half of boards.
Maintenance, three minutes at the end of the day
- Rinse everything in fresh water, foil taken apart if you sailed in the sea.
- Dry the screws before reassembly and use grease or anti-seize on aluminium.
- Check foil torque before every session: a loose bolt is what ends a session.
- Never leave the wing inflated in the sun: pressure rises and leading edges fail exactly that way.
Frequently asked questions
For light wind, bigger wing or bigger foil?
Bigger foil, without question. More front wing area means earlier take-off in less wind and far less effort; an oversized wing becomes heavy to handle the moment a gust arrives.
How many wings do I actually need?
Two cover almost everything: one for the average wind at your spot and one about 1.5 m² smaller for strong days. A third only makes sense if you often sail below 12 knots.
What difference does a carbon foil make over aluminium?
Carbon is stiffer and lighter: sharper response and less effort when pumping. Aluminium costs far less and survives impacts better, which is the sensible choice while you are learning and occasionally hitting the bottom.
Can I use the SUP board I already own?
For the very first attempts with the wing, yes — it builds confidence. But without a foil box you will never fly, and fitting a foil to a board not built for it is not safe.
