Why check the radar before you go out
Over Lake Garda, summer storms build above the ridges in a matter of tens of minutes and drop onto the water with almost no warning. The wind that runs ahead of them — the gust front — arrives before the rain and can go from five to thirty knots in a couple of minutes, often reversing direction entirely. That is the moment you find yourself downwind of the shore with gear you can no longer handle.
What this page shows
A continuously updated precipitation radar, convective cells with their intensity, and guard zones: the sectors from which, given the shape of the lake, an incoming cell becomes a problem for your spot. Alongside the radar we show an estimate of the squall wind, derived from the available convective energy and from high-resolution models.
How to read it
What matters is not only where a cell is now, but where it is heading and whether it is growing. A weak cell closing fast is more dangerous than a strong one moving away. The rule of thumb: if an active cell is within ten kilometres and tracking towards the spot, the time to head in has already passed.
