The Pelèr is Lake Garda’s northerly wind: it drains down from the Trentino mountains during the dark hours, peaks shortly after dawn and dies in late morning. It is the wind that made the northern lake famous worldwide — and also the one that, if you misjudge it, gets you up at five for nothing.
At night the air in contact with the mountain slopes cools, becomes denser and slides downhill. Lake Garda is a narrow, deep valley running from north down to the plain: that cold air is channelled and gains speed, exactly like water in a funnel. This is the Pelèr — a drainage wind, not a thermal breeze.
It has several names along the shores: Suer, Sover, or simply «Vento», the wind, because for those living on the northern lake it is the wind. It is cold, dry air, and on the water it raises a short, closely spaced chop.
The Pelèr belongs to the night and the early morning. It builds in the small hours, peaks between first light and mid-morning, then fades. What kills it is not calm: it is the Ora, the southerly thermal that starts once the sun heats the plain and works in direct opposition to it.
That is the first practical thing to know: the Pelèr window is narrow and has to be taken early. Arriving at the spot at nine in summer usually means finding the tail of it, not the wind.
The Pelèr is not the same everywhere on the lake, and geography explains why. In the northern basin the mountains drop sheer into the water and the lake is narrow: descending air is compressed and accelerates. Torbole, Riva, Navene, Limone and Campione sit in that constriction, and that is where the wind is strongest and most consistent.
Going south the lake widens and the shores flatten: the same flow spreads over a far greater surface and loses strength. In the southern basin the Pelèr arrives weaker and less reliable, and on many days it does not arrive at all — even when the northern lake is fully powered.
The classic signal is the pressure gradient between the northern and southern side of the Alps: when pressure to the north is higher than over the plain, the air has one more reason to drain down the valley. It is the same pressure difference this app measures continuously and shows on every Lake Garda spot page.
The rest of the picture is high-pressure weather: clear skies, dry air, a cloudless night that lets the slopes cool. An overcast night dampens the drainage, because clouds trap the heat.
Here we can add something a generic description cannot, because we measure it: the Pelèr does not behave the same way at every spot, and the pressure gradient alone is not enough to forecast it everywhere.
At well-exposed stations in the northern lake the gradient works well: when it points to Pelèr, the wind is usually there. At a sheltered, marginal spot in the southern basin the same rule is wrong nearly every time — the station stays calm for the large majority of hours under every pressure regime.
At that spot we found two things matter far more than the gradient: the night-to-morning time window, and confirmation that the Pelèr is already blowing at a well-exposed station further north. With both, the forecast improves almost threefold.
The counter-intuitive detail: it is not delayed propagation. We looked for a north-south lag of one, two, three hours, and the effect weakens rather than strengthens. The regime establishes itself across most of the basin at the same time; poorly exposed spots only show it once it is already strong everywhere.
Honesty about the sample: this analysis comes from one summer window, not years of archive. We will redo it with more data, and if it changes we will say so here.
The Pelèr is the northern lake’s expert wind: strong, cold, with a short chop bouncing between the shores. It is not the wind to learn to fly on — that is the Ora, more gradual and warmer.
Two practical warnings. First: being a northerly running down the lake, along much of the shore it is offshore or close to it, and getting away from the beach costs little while getting back costs a lot. Second: temperature. This is air arriving from the mountains before dawn, and the water is at its coldest of the day.
Early. The good window sits between first light and mid-morning, and at many northern spots the parking is full before seven. Arriving mid-morning means catching the tail of the wind, not the wind.
Because the flow is the same but the cross-section of the lake is not. In the north the air descends into a narrow basin between high walls and accelerates; in the south the lake widens, the same volume of air spreads over a much larger surface and the speed collapses.
Yes, and that is the classic Garda day in stable weather: Pelèr in the morning, calm around midday, Ora in the afternoon. The two winds do not coexist — they take turns.
Night-time drainage is not a summer phenomenon; long clear nights favour it. What is missing in winter is the afternoon changeover to the Ora, which is thermal and depends on the sun. Our archive starts in June 2026, so we cannot yet give per-season percentages.
